“The Heliopolis Cooperative began its work in 2000. We had seven farmers,” Walid Habshi says to Roads & Kingdoms Blog. “None of us had grown grapes for wine. We did grow a grape native to Lebanon: Obeideh.” “Our first vintage was in 2004,” Habshi says. “It takes time for vines to produce properly. Now we have around 200 farmers—current farmers, to be clear—producing between 500 and 700 tons [of grapes] a year. 250 hectares.”
